2010 UKSTT Awards

Terra Solutions Ltd won “Highly Commended” for New Installation: Large Project for the works on the Dublin Bay  5.1b scheme.  The works involved the construction of 1200 metres of microtunnelling in 1000mm and 600mm diameters through a busy residential area in a suburb of Dublin.  Despite challenging ground conditions, the works were completed 3 months ahead of schedule.

Spoil from the tunnelling works was graded and used in other parts of the works.  Overall, 95% of the excavation arisings were recycled on site.

Terra Solutions predecessor, the Irish Tunnelling arm of McAllister Brothers was also a previous winner of the UKSTT award for New Installation: Small Project for the Kilsyth Wastewater scheme.

A 400mm diameter pipe was installed to a length of 270m at a 7% grade to form a gravity sewer.  The pipeline was required to pass beneath a farm with various sheds, outhouses and associated farm equipment, a 39.4-ft (12-m) hill, the Burn River and the Antonine Wall built by the Romans in 140 A.D. to keep the marauding Picts from the north out of Roman England.

Obviously, the only way to achieve the desired result without encroaching on the sanctioned area around the wall would be to use trenchless means.  Horizontal Directional Drilling was chosen for the installation.  Despite tricky geology consisting of sand and silts and boulders, with consolidated sandstone and siltstone later in the drive, the pipe was installed successfully and accurately
