Timberheading
When short connections need to be constructed, where there is insufficient room for thrust and reception shafts, when branches from existing underground networks are required, there is often no better technique than timber heading. This very traditional method of underground construction offers great flexibility. It can be commenced from the smallest of shafts or even from an existing manhole. Blind connections can be made into existing chambers and pipelines from within a heading.
The technique relies upon the surrounding ground to be stable and dry. Timber frames are installed at pre-determined intervals defined by design requirements. Head and side support may also be provided by timber, although lightweight structural corrugated steel may also be used. The flexibility of the method allows for multiple direction changes to avoid existing underground infrastructure. Upon completion, the heading is normally backfilled with concrete and cementitious grout.
Terra Solutions can offer tiimber heading as a method of construction where circumstances dictate. Our attention to Health, Safety and Environmental rules and legislation allows Clients peace of mind under such unusual circumstances.
